Security is not only about wireless home security system
Home security is something that most people give a serious thought at least once. Some people are more concerned than others. Availability of wireless security systems can sometimes make you think that wireless home security systems are the only way of ensuring security of your home. So much so, that you might forget other ways and means of achieving home security. Wireless home security systems are indeed more effective than the wired home security systems. Besides that there are a number of other benefits too that are associated with wireless home security.
However, an even more effective home security solution lies in a combination of wireless security systems and traditional home security techniques. Moreover, not everyone can afford the most sophisticated wireless home security systems (e.g. remote monitoring systems that employ outdoor wireless security cameras, indoor wireless camera security systems, mobile phone calling mechanism etc) that provide the utmost security. In such a case, the overall home security can be bolstered by using traditional home security systems and techniques. Here is a list of such techniques:
1. Neighborhood watch program: Neighborhood watch programs are quite an old concept. However, such a program is generally quite effective in fighting crime and enhancing security. You should surely consider joining a neighborhood watch program especially if you feel that the amount of home security measures/ devices that you have deployed is not sufficient. If you don’t have one running already in your neighborhood, you could pioneer it for the benefit of all.
2. Good quality locks: No matter how sophisticated your wireless security is, you will always need to ensure that you lock your house properly and that you lock it using high quality locks. Do not use a low quality lock just because you have already spent a lot on home security. Remember, locks are your first line of defense in any case. However, this doesn’t mean that you should go for the most expensive lock in the city. Just use a good quality lock that offers sufficient resistance to the burglars. You will need good locks both for your windows and for your doors. Also, it’s very important that you don’t forget to actually lock your doors and windows when you are going out. No home security system is good if you forget to lock your doors, windows etc. In fact, the same can be said about wireless security too. If you forget to switch on your wireless home security system before going out, even the most expensive and sophisticated wireless security system would be a waste.
3. Get a watchdog: Watchdogs have always been known as very reliable. A watchdog can alert you about any intruders and hence help in preventing crime. However, a number of people prefer using wireless security cameras and other wireless security devices instead of going for a watchdog.
4. Stick a label: You must have seen the stickers at super markets and other public places that say “CCTV in operation”. Ever wondered why that poster was being put all over the place? Well, quite simply, such stickers and posters are used to warn the burglars/ criminals that they are being observed. Such posters act as deterrents for the unsophisticated criminals and even for a number of sophisticated criminals too. This is because the criminals are always looking for soft targets and if there is high level of security at a particular place, they would rather go looking for another place where there are no wireless security cameras or other such arrangements. So, criminals too follow the “Path of least resistance” and if you tell them that you are offering high resistance, they will be put off. Hence you kill the crime in the bud. In fact, some people use these stickers even if they do not have wireless home security (or any kind of home security) system in place.
5. Use of safety deposit box: It’s quite prudent to reduce your risk by keeping some of your valuables (those that you know would not be required in the near future), in a safety deposit box that you can rent out at a bank. However, this doesn’t mean that you wouldn’t need home security systems. You would still need wired/ wireless home security systems. The only difference would be that your requirements might change from a super sophisticated wireless security system to a simpler one.
These are just some of the basic things that you must bear in mind. Remember, home security isn’t about wireless home security only.
