Caring for your wireless security system

Home security systems provide peace of mind. Wireless security systems are known to provide the best home security. However, it is quite important to care for it. Proper care of your wireless security system will ensure that:

These instructions can range from simple cleaning procedures to some kind of troubleshooting or testing in order to detect the problems and rectify them. You must use these guidelines and adhere to these instructions in all cases.

One of the quick and the best ways of checking the wireless security system is to test them. Here are a few tips:

1.     You can check your wireless security cameras by checking the pictures / video footage recorded (or transmitted online) by them. Make sure that you check the quality of the video/pictures recorded/ transmitted. Some times, the cameras might transmit bad quality video/pictures due to malfunctioning but most of the times the bad quality is because of dirt, dust, water, snow etc that block your wireless security cameras. At other times, the culprit might be the recording device or the transmission systems. Based on what the problem is, you will need to take an appropriate action for its rectification. If it’s dust, you can do the cleaning by yourself. In fact, regular cleaning of these security devices is very much required. 3.     Check your wireless security alarms by triggering them yourself. Here you would also need to take note of the sound level of the alarm. Ensure that it is loud enough.

4.     Check the motion detector system by making movement across the motion detector’s field. Note that here you would also be checking the distance till which your motion detector detects movement.

5.     Besides checking the individual security devices, you also need to check the overall wireless security system and ensure that the co-ordination among various devices is perfect. Here, it might be useful to think about and write down the list of scenarios in which you expect the wireless security system to act (also include the actual response that you would expect from the home security system in each scenario). This documentation will form your testing plan and will help you conduct your maintenance activities quickly and accurately.

6.     Over a period of time, your security requirements might change too or you might want to implement a different strategy e.g. you might want to change the position of your wireless security cameras or of other security devices. However, evaluate the change properly before going ahead with it.

One golden rule to remember is that if you get a feeling that something might have affected your home security system in an adverse manner, just go ahead and test it out; don’t wait for the next round of maintenance for checking it out (your laziness might lead to lapse of home security; and if burglars strike during that period of lapse, all the money and effort that you had applied for buying and maintaining your wireless security system will go a begging).
